Inside Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley AVA is the Applegate Valley sub-AVA, an area formed by the flow of the Little Applegate and Applegate Rivers that wind between the peaks of the Siskiyou Mountains with Jacksonville in the southeast and Grants Pass in the northwest. This area consists of 19 wineries and a total acreage of 278,190 with family-owned, multigenerational farms dominating the landscape.

While the Southern Oregon AVA, established in 2005, is better known for growing warmer-weather grapes, certain locations have ideal microclimates for Pinot Noir.
